Emotions Through Colors
With years of experience come several rules when it comes to hanging pictures. First, unless you’ve always yearned to live in an art gallery, don’t hang pictures on every available wall space, hang a picture on a wall only if it seems bare without it. I’m all for hanging pictures in groups, over a sofa, console table, server, or small pier table. Further your knowledge on paintings at pet portraits from photos.
What is next is a second rule. Never make the groupings wider than the furniture underneath it. Achieving a unified look is simple even with pictures that are of varying sizes for all you need to do is hang them closer together. Other than having different sized frames for a prized collection of bird prints their types may also vary. When hanging pictures do so according to pleasing geometrics and not frame by frame.
There is another rule after this. What the wall does as a frame is to serve to set off a group of pictures on all four sides even with pictures hung in close proximity. When I talk about pleasing geometry, I mean hanging pictures so that the frames form either a square or a rectangle. When your task involves four pictures all framed alike and of the same size a good idea would be hang them geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table, or vertically above a small step table. If you must hang pictures in a step pattern, do so only on a staircase. Straight lines meeting at nice right angles make for the best arrangements. Sometimes you need a little regimentation in life.
Let us say that you are in possession of a series of pictures you have managed to accumulate over time and these consist of old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions. To unify these as you hang them together framing and matting everything alike would be a good option to take. It was a friend who used simple gold frames on 16 prints matting them in forest green. After being set against a red wall the look was outstanding. Using a unique shade when she matted each picture over her sofa was the way a friend added color.
