Automotive Chain Blocks – ToolsRUs

An essential tool for lifting heavy objects such as machinery, an engine or drive train, chain blocks are commonly found in automotive as well as machine shops. They feature an internal bearing mechanism that allows you to pull on a separate chain and lift up an incredible amount of weight. Made from high-strength alloy steel, chain blocks are very durable. For any commercial shop as well as an outfitted home shop, a chain block is a must-have tool.

A chain block is rated to support anywhere from a half tonne to twenty tonnes, depending on the unit. For most lifting jobs encountered in an average auto or machine shop, a two- or three-tonne chain block should suffice. The primary purpose of a chain block is to vertically lift out an engine from a vehicle or lift or suspend some other component. Chain blocks are either mounted in a fixed position or to a moving runner. Large shops with the necessary fixtures are more likely to use a running block.

The bearing mechanism and gear assembly is contained in the block, a small cylindrical body through which several strands of chain pass. Attached to the top of the block is a drop-forged hook with safety latch. This hook connects to the runner or some other fixture. From the bottom of the block, the load chain extends with a heavy-duty load hook attached. Whatever object is to be lifted or suspended, this hook attaches to it. Next to the load chain is the haul chain that is used to control the vertical motion of the load chain.

The mechanical efficiency of a chain block means that an operator can lift an engine out of its compartment by pulling on the haul chain. Thus, it only requires minimal effort to move an object weighing several tonnes. To lower an object safely, chain blocks also feature asbestos-free braking mechanisms.

A chain block is somewhat limited in scope in that it can only lift and lower vertically. In an auto or machine shop, this is pretty much all they are needed to do. A good alternative to an engine crane, a chain block is an essential tool in shops with the space and necessary structure to support it.
