Fly Fishing Tackle Summary: The Hardy Bougle MK VII (MK7) Reel
With fly fishing tackle, I can be a bit of a curmudgeon. Do you know what a curmudgeon is? Well, according to an old dictionary I found, it’s a “crusty, irascible, cantankerous person full of stubborn ideas.”. I especially like the “stubborn ideas” bit, because I take it to mean that I prefer a traditional, proven approach to fly fishing. Throughout the years, this cantankerous fisher has obtained a wide variety of fishing tackle, but I generally go back to Hardy products. Read further to get a short summary of my one of my preferred products: the Bougle MK VII (MK7) reel.
Fly Fishing Tackle: Key Features of the Bougle MK VII (MK7) Reel
Selling for around £429.00, this MK VII is really a considerable expense for many anglers. However, I far prefer owning a few pieces of quality fly fishing tackle than a large quantity of cheaply-priced fishing supplies which are going to fall short on performance at the most crucial time. The spool, plate, and frame of the Bougle are built with sturdy 6061 aluminium. Just being curious, I looked up some facts on 6061 aluminium and saw that it is a robust aluminium alloy with magnesium and silicon a its major alloying constituents. 6061 aluminium has got excellent mechanical substances and is additionally effortless to weld. These features make it one of the most common aluminium alloys for general-purpose use. So, I was glad to see it used in the MK VII reel.
Fly Fishing Tackle: More Facts Concerning the Hardy Bougle MK VII (MK7) Reel
Another quality feature in the construction of this reel is that the aluminium is polished before it’s anodised, which gives maximum protection. Also, if you own other MK series reels like I do, know that the spools interchange amongst the MK4, MK5, and MK6 versions. Also, the Bougle MK VII is equipped with ball race made from stainless steel for exceptionally smooth performance. The line guard is a durable, rotating nickel-silver one. The click check system makes a sweet sound to my ears, and has a good, wide range. The producers at Hardy have reached the peak of perfection with this reel, even for a pernickety fisherman like me. You can easily transfer it from left- to right-handed winding. The back on the reel is held in place by a powerful dovetail fit, plus two rust-deterrent stainless screws. Around 225m of line can be put on the MK VII. It has a weight of 256g, with a diameter of 101m.
Fly Fishing Tackle: Regarding the Layout of the Bougle
In excess of 100 years ago, an angler named Louis Bougle wanted the Hardy industry to come up with a reel which was really light, but still had enough line capacity for the lighter rods of the period. And so it was that the Bougle series came into existence, initially seen in Hardy’s catalogue of 1903. The nearly-perfect design has changed little since then, except for a few improvements by the engineers at Hardy. With the look and feel of the company’s highly respected MK IV model, the MK VII, with all its premium features, is a decidedly modern take on a classic Hardy fly fishing tackle design and style. I’m contented to give it my highest accolade without hesitation.
