Small Dogs – The Brussels Griffon, Welsh Terriers, and the Whippet
Unless you have a particular type of dog in mind, it can be hard to decide which breed to buy. The first step is to think about the size of the dog you’d like. Can you manage a large dog where you live? Or do you only have a courtyard? Small dogs can provide great company. And there are a lot of different types of small dogs, very different in both temperament and appearance. You probably know about toy dogs, however there are others that are similar to their larger canine siblings.
We’ll discuss 3 breeds in this article – welsh terriers, brussels griffons and whippets.
Brussels Griffon Dogs
The large eyes of the brussels griffon are thought to have been part of the inspiration behind the creation of the ewoks by George Lucas in the Star Wars films. Looking at these cute dogs, you can see why people think this.
Brussels griffons are very sensitive and devoted dogs who will bond with one person in particular. They should be socialized when they are young pups. Their sensitivity and one-person nature make them a better choice for childless couples, singles, and the elderly than those looking for a family pet.
Brussels griffon get along well with other animals, particularly cats. You may need to keep an eye out on how they interact with bigger dogs, however. They can challenge for dominance, not really aware of their small size.
Welsh Terriers
These cute dogs are fairly calm when you look at other terrier breeds. They have a sturdy look, and lots of personality, especially the males. Welsh terriers are inquisitive, affectionate, outgoing, happy, and fearless.
Many years ago, Welsh terriers were used to keep the rat and vermin population down, consequently welsh terriers love to chase things – including cats. So,, if you own a cat, this may not be the best pet for your family.
Great with children, welsh terriers need a backyard where they can’t escape as they have a predilection for digging, and could thus escape. When walking a welsh terrier, make sure he stays on the leash, because his road sense when on a quest for fun is not very good.
Welsh terriers require quite a commitment from their owners. They need regular grooming, and get bored when home alone for too long. They probably suit someone with a part time job instead of a full time job. When they’re bored, they can be destructive around the house.
Whippet Information
Whippets belong to the family of dogs known as sighthounds, so known as that as they hunt by using their keen eyesight and great speed, instead of using scents like scent hounds. These elegant looking dogs are small, with heights that span 17.5 to 20 inches. And the whippet dog breed look just like miniature greyhounds!
Whippets have been described as being like toy dogs in nature, in that they are happy to sleep on your lap. They are very loyal to their owner, though still friendly to strangers and children. The whippet dog breed are very gentle, so much so that they have been used in aged care homes.
These dogs need to be kept indoors. With such thin coats, they will be too cold outside, and they have a strong bond to their owners. If you’re prepared to exercise them regularly, whippets are great for apartment living.
