The Bergerac Wine Region and Wines by Billy Jarvis
Nothing compares to the ultimate relaxing moment when sipping your favourite red wine with the most delectable cheese. If you want to have a taste of some of the great tasting wine in the world then the Bergerac region is the place for you.
Bergerac is a wine region in the east of Bordeaux on the Dordogne region and is awidely popular for its medium red wine. Aside from red wine, white and Rose Bergerac are also some of the more popular wine from the region. Bergerac wines are made from customary staple grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot (reds), Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc (whites) and are occasionally mixed with less common grapes in order to produce exceptional flavours and textures.
The secret to the best tasting wines in the region is its lime rich soil which is perfect for the production of dry whites such as the White Cabernet and rich fruity reds. One of the famous vineyards is the Chateau de Monbazillac where tourists are welcome to learn more about wines, and also sample and buy their famous wine.
Although Bergerac has been living behind the shadows of Bordeaux in terms of wine popularity, it’s still recognised as the wine representative of South France. This is mainly because it caters to both the high end and mass market with a variety of wine ranging from specialty wines to simple wines. Moreover, Bergerac is known to be a robust and reliable wine.
Some of the signature wines of The Bergerac region include:
Red Bergerac
The Red Bergerac is a deep coloured wine that tends to be rich and fruity and makes a good partner with chicken and Coq au Vin and is also a good combination with Mozzarella cheese.
White Bergerac
This type of Bergerac wine is generally dry and crisp with a hint of citrus flavours brought about by the use of Semillon grape along with Sauvignon, Ondec and Chenin Blanc. White Bergerac is best served with fish and goes well with courgette soufflé.
Cotes-de-Bergerac
This Bergerac wine has a more full-bodied taste compared since it is aged longer thus you can be assured that the wine you’re drinking is made from one specific place in Bergerac and accredited as such by the AOC (appellation d’origine controlee).
